Certified NT2 teacher – all levels

My name is Inge Serné and I work as an NT2 teacher, which means I teach Dutch to people for whom it is not their native language. I do this with great enthusiasm and involvement, because for me language is much more than just words and grammar. It is a key to participation, to self-expression, and to finding your place in a new environment. I am naturally curious about people and their stories — which is precisely why I chose this profession. In my lessons I meet students from all kinds of different countries, with diverse backgrounds, ages and goals.

Experience and training

Having worked as a French teacher in secondary education, I discovered early on how fascinating language acquisition is. How do people learn a new language? What makes something difficult, or easy? And how can you best support someone in that process? Over recent years I have specialised in NT2 education and have worked for a number of different employers.

My lessons

In the classroom I try to create a safe and open atmosphere. It is important that students feel confident enough to speak up, even when they make mistakes. Making mistakes is part of learning — and often it is where the most learning happens. I frequently say: “Mistakes are welcome.” Through plenty of practice in speaking, listening, reading and writing, students gradually build up their confidence. My lessons are practical and focused on everyday life. We practise conversations in the supermarket, at the doctor’s or at work, for example. We also pay attention to cultural aspects, because language and culture are closely intertwined. Why do Dutch people say certain things in a certain way? And how can you best express yourself in different situations?

In short

As an NT2 teacher, my aim is not only to pass on knowledge, but also to support people in their journey of growth and integration. I see it as a collaboration, in which we work together on language, confidence and new opportunities. And I hope that my students feel seen, heard and motivated to get the best out of themselves.
